The director of mobilisation of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), Mr Anthony Ani, has enjoined staff of the scheme to treat all corps members serving the nation with honour and respect.
Speaking while fielding questions from newsmen after receiving the 2015 National Productivity Order of Merit Award, Ani stated that the responsibility of NYSC staff did not stop only at handling files but handling human being adding that it became imperative for them to work towards fulfilling both responsibilities.
“NYSC staff are different from other civil servants because we handle files and human beings. The corps members today could be the president or directors tomorrow. We should treat all corps members with respect and dignity. Treat them well because you are the ones whom they can see as their parents at the present. Mentor them and direct them well. The corps members you are seeing today might be the ‘Dangote’ of tomorrow and should be given all the respect they desire”, he said.
Ani stated that the award he received meant that the work NYSC has been doing through him has been recognised adding that the award will spur him into doing more.
“It means that what the NYSC has been doing was worth it and has been recognised. It means more work for us in NYSC and for me in particular. It means that what we are doing, people are watching”, he said.
He stated that through his hard work and support from his boss, he has aided in bringing lots of innovations into the scheme including the online registration and delivery of call up letters for corps members.
“I joined the NYSC in 1993 and I have brought many innovations into the scheme. When I was posted to Kano, shortly after the crises that took place in 1994 when many people were running away from the state, there was no orientation camp there. I was able to convince the government of Kano of the importance of a permanent camp and within a year, they built one of the best orientation camps. I was also able to eliminate the issue of fake corps in Kano because I introduced registration with corps members’ pictures,” he said.
“In Lagos, I perfected the ICT there. Corps members were registering online. Once corps members were paid, they got an alert,” he said.
He urged all civil servant to continue to work hard as hard work pays, adding that, “Everything is not about money. We keep saying that money is not enough, whatever money is given to you, do you to the best of your ability because it is God that will reward you. People should continue to work hard because people are watching you.”
